Life Sentence

Deep in the foliage of a jungle in Da Nang
Night tracers syncopate the moonlit skies
Bright as a Christmas tree, bullets and explosions,
Friend and foe alike dropping like flies

In a Leavenworth jail cell sits a man accused, life sentence,
No chance for parole, society says he's a killer, dangerous,
That's what they say
The truth was, he lost his family in a car wreck
And was denied the chance to go home to their funerals
Over 13,000 miles away

In a combat zone,
They couldn't, no, wouldn't get him out
Way too much effort for only one
Causing the man to snap, and from Compant Commander
To administrative clerk, he shot them all dead,
That's what he'd done

Alone in solitary confinement, lost deep in thought,
I found the after all he'd been through, he could still smile
I'd look to see if anyone was coming, sit down, turn on my ears,
And listen to him for awhile

Mesmerised by his sad story, was he a victim of fate?
Or some kind of cruel destiny?
How much can one person take with this kind of pain?
You tell me

In this cell sits a man who, through an emotional breakdown,
Lost everything dear
Left to think over what he had done, and rewind the tape
Year after year, after year

In this cell sits a man who may never get to feel love again.
In the cell sits a man...
