Sam

Sam, when I saw you first
You had no name
Sam, when I saw you first
You could not rise
Sam, when I saw you first
You could only gaze into my eyes
Sam, when I saw you first
You were maimed and covered in mange
Sam, when I saw you first
All your bones were there to count
Sam, when I saw you first
I thought that only death could heal you,
But then you thumped your tail
And my heart was captured
You moved from nameless dog
To finding your way into our hearts
You sang to us and won your place
You enriched our lives with your funny grace
Sam, you became our protector,
Friend and family member
I wanted you to live forever
But you were mortal
As are we Sam, when I saw you last
You could not rise
And then I knew
That only death could heal you
So I rubbed your ears for one last time
Now your life is a memory sweet
And I have the hope that again we’ll meet!
